Nuru-Slums
Shadrack
Shadrack, born on 5 July 2007, grew up in the slums of Ronda in Kenya. From an early age, he lived in extremely difficult circumstances and did not have the privilege like other children who enjoyed a safe shelter, access to food and medical care. The daily search for food was a constant struggle: day after day, Shadrack sat next to a hotel hoping for leftovers that were actually destined for the rubbish bin. Hunger, cold and insecurity defined his everyday life. Every single night on the street was dangerous, and he often did not know where to sleep or find shelter. Rain and storms made his situation even worse, and the lack of medical care often led to illnesses that he had to cope with alone. Despite all these adversities, Shadrack retained a strong will to survive and a quiet hope that life might offer him a chance at some point.
One night, Shadrack was discovered sleeping on an abandoned porch and was brought to a state orphanage by the police. There he met Santos, the founder of Nuru Slums Hope for Africa, who immediately recognised his potential and welcomed Shadrack into the Nuru family. From that moment on, his life changed significantly. He was provided with a safe home, regular meals, medical care and, above it all, love, care and support. For the first time in his life, Shadrack was able to be a child, play, laugh and form friendships with other siblings. The Nuru Family gave him a sense of security and belonging that he had never experienced before. This experience taught him that there are people who truly care about others and that even in difficult situations, hope and opportunities can emerge.

Thanks to the comprehensive support provided by Nuru Slums Hope for Africa, Shadrack has access to a good education and the opportunity to follow his dreams. His greatest wish is to become a lawyer for the poor so that he can help people in need, enable justice and make a positive difference in the lives of others. The support of the Nuru Family gives him the tools to overcome obstacles, develop his skills and look to the future with confidence. Today, Shadrack is happy to have found a family that protects and supports him. He has come to realise that education, security and care are the keys to breaking the vicious cycle of poverty. Shadrack’s story shows how even children in the most difficult circumstances can find hope, opportunities and a better future through support, mentoring and a loving environment.
