Nuru-Slums
Mike Ikiba
Mike Ikiba, born on 1 October 2003, grew up in the harsh conditions of slum life. In the dirty, crowded streets of Ronda, a slum in Kenya, he had to fight for survival from a young age. Like many other children in his neighbourhood, he suffered from a lack of basic human needs: sufficient food, a stable roof over his head and clean water were luxuries that most could not afford. Added to this was the danger posed by criminal activity and violence, which shaped everyday life. Every day was a struggle against hunger, cold and a lack of security. Mike often ran desperately through the streets, his only goal being to get at least one meal before finding a place to sleep in abandoned buildings or on the street. The poverty and hardship he experienced on a daily basis left a deep mark on his childhood and shaped the strong will to survive that characterises him. Despite the hardship, he retained a quiet hope that one day life might have more in store for him.
Amidst these extreme living conditions, Mike Ikiba met Santos, the founder of Nuru Slums Hope for Africa. He saw Mike’s plight and opened the door to a life of care and hope. Mike was allowed to live at Santos’ home, where he could recover from the hardships of life on the streets. At last, he had a balanced meal every day, a roof over his head and the love, support and guidance he so desperately needed. Through Nuru Slums Hope for Africa, Mike experienced community, a sense of belonging and security for the first time. Later, the family grew to include several more children who also became part of the Nuru family. Mike is proud to be a member of this supportive community that nurtures him in every way. Meeting Santos changed his life fundamentally: he learned that there are people who truly care about the welfare of others and that compassion and support can bring hope to hopeless situations.

Thanks to the comprehensive support provided by Nuru Slums Hope for Africa, Mike not only receives accommodation and food, but also access to education, healthcare and personal mentoring. This support gives him the opportunity to pursue his dream of studying engineering. With this knowledge, he wants to help not only his family, but also society as a whole, and make a lasting contribution to breaking the vicious cycle of poverty. The combination of a difficult childhood and the opportunity for education has taught Mike that obstacles can be overcome with the right tools and support. Today, Mike is a symbol of hope, resilience and the power to achieve dreams despite adverse circumstances. Every step he takes is proof that even in the most difficult situations in life, opportunities for change exist when people come together to help each other.
